Writing A Synopsis

Today, I've been busy writing a synopsis for my pocket novel. Yes, I know you normally map out a plot for your novel before you start writing, but I didn't. I wrote a short sketch of an idea, which then wrote itself. Now I know what you're all thinking, what has she got to worry about if the PN wrote itself?
The problem being where you would have a sort of synopsis all ready written, which would just need a darn good polishing, I didn't.  I've just spent the whole day writing the thing from scratch. It is true what they say about it being harder to write a synopsis than it is the complete book.

How do you write two and half page synopsis and make it sound so exciting that the agent/editor/ publisher will fight tooth and nail to get their grubby little mitts on it?  Well, I just hope I’ve managed to do just that today.
If I have, don’t worry, I’ll soon let you all know.
Best wishes,
Jarmara

Put a bunch of novel writers together and I be more than half of them will feel the same as you. I hate synopsis.

That's good to know, Susan. I've been making changes to it this morning. The trouble is you think it reads fine, and are happy with it, but you're not the one you need to impress.

I think all writers dread synposes. I don't plan, either, so I do understand. I think that (for me) writing out a plan is like seeing into the future. Impossible. I can only write about it as I go along. (I'm just wondering how to explain this to my agent, who wants about three page of outline before I even start, and I just can't do it.)

Good luck, Jarmara!

I'm with you,Frances as I work on the book new ideas come to me. If I was to sit and plan the whole thing out I would get into a panic because I couldn't think of anything. Having said that this morning while playing around with the synopsis I've come up with a better ending for my pocket novel.

Good luck with your three page outline, Frances

I don't know anyone who likes writing a synopsis. Whenever I've written one, I've rarely stuck to it - I'm like Frances and prefer to write as I go along and as you say, as you write new ideas come to you!
Good luck with yours x
